Haiti on my mind

Yes, I know everyone has been talking about the earthquake in Haiti that happened this past Tuesday, January 12th, but I have to add my own opinion on it.
Even though I have no ties to Haiti, I feel somewhat affected by what is going on because just like a fellow Nigerian is my brother or sister, I look at the people of Haiti like my brothers and sisters. The amount of assistance that people from all over the world are giving to the island and people of Haiti is incredible! There are doctors, nurses, volunteers, missionaries and military personel helping their fellow human beings as best as they can. Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Wyclef Jean has really inspired me in more ways than one, they are AWESOME . Dr. Sanjay has really inspired me to go into the medical field, especially after seeing him treat a 15 day old baby...

It really is nice to see people of all races/backgrounds and religions reaching out to help the people of Haiti.Even hollywood stars, big buisnesses and professional athletes are helping out. Texting to Wyclef Jean's charity 'yele' and redcross ( among other charities) has become the main way to donate, which I have already done but I want to do so much more. Social networking websites like twitter and facebook have helped tremendously, as in I was shocked ( the internet really is a life saver) people were able to post pictures of their loved ones on the internent ( CNN) and get responses as to their whereabouts.

My mother is trying to collect clothing/blankets for the people of Haiti, because some of her haitian friends( one of her friends nephew was the only survivor in his house) have said that people are sleeping without blankets and it gets really cold  at night. Around my way there are lots and lots of food/clothing drives held at churches and other places where people can drop cans of food and blankets...Thinking of the people of Haiti also makes me think of how we ( people living in highly industrialized nations) tend to complain A LOT ( myself included) we complain about everything from the people at mcdonalds putting pickles on our cheesburgers when we specifically said ' no PICKLES', we complain about how we have absolutely nothing to wear, when in fact we have closets  FULL of clothes. Compared to about 90 % of the world, we have an overabundance of COMFORT  and I don't need a statistic to tell me that. We have access to food, healthcare, transportation, and clothing. I try to keep in the back of my mind ( in every situation ) that it could be worse and that someone in another part of the nation, world, city or town may have it worse than I do. The people of Haiti don't deserve this despite what people are saying about Haiti 'making a deal with the devil'.

As I make preparations  to head to Port-Au-Prince, I will pray for those lost in the earthquake and the families who have lost loved ones....
