My mother is probably the sweetest mother around, folks around our way used to say she was like a white lady because almost all the Nigerian mothers we knew at the time, would beat the mess out of their children(in public or private) for even the smallest things . Growing up, my siblings and I clung to my mother like our lives depended on it, if she went to work we cried, even if she was gone even for a few hours we would cry for mommy. My father was around, but there was something about his demeanor that scared the living daylights out of us. I guess it was his appearance; tall, dark skin and bald ( either that or his hair was very close shaven) he was a handsome man, but the looks he could give someone were terrifying, but then he could easily crack a smile or erupt in a hearty laugh that could put us at ease..Her children always came first and no one, not even my father could come between that.My mom was the type that spoiled her children, especially my brother.. Whether it was candy, toys, barney or aladin tapes, she would go out and get it.The funny thing is, now that we are teenagers/young adults she hardly spoils us, but one thing that remains is the way I react when she comes back from school or work, just like a child who gets excited at the mere presence of their mom or dad when they walk through the door, I, at 19 years old react the same way. My face lights up, I get excited /giddy and kiss & hug her like a little kid. I guess that habit of mine will never die down, even if I'm 30, I'll still cover her face in kisses and give her hugs.Sometimes she'll say ' you think your a baby' but all the same, she lights up too and shes all smiles.
She is a tall woman, with cinnamon colored skin and a lithe frame. Her face is somewhat round ( and not a wrinkle in sight) she has the cutest nose, and slightly slanted eyes ( chinky). Her lips are full and her black hair is now peppered with streaks of silver-gray hair. All the years of hard work are finally taking its toll on her once active body, her knees are swelling and her back is aching.Yet,she forges ahead for her children and for that I truly thank her. Mommy mi: the sweetest mother in the world!
